  23. Well after working with it for a while, my opinion remains the 
  24. same...Coolness!

  26. The Intel version of Sparks works as a plugin, which basically 
  27. means there's no separate interface screen, it's all handled 
  28. from a plugin submenu in LW itself.
  29.  
  30. You activate the plugin from the Objects/Displacement Plug-ins 
  31. button. Once it's activated, you have access to the Options 
  32. menu/panel. From here you have numeric input requesters for 
  33. Velocity, Velocity Randomize, Gravity, Startframe, Lifespan, 
  34. Lifespan Randomize and Birthrate.

  36. This is also where you choose your "spray pattern", with either 
  37. Spherical, Radial or Directional. There's also a button for 
  38. "inherit velocity from parent". Two other buttons which lead to 
  39. subpanels of their own are Scene and Effects.
  40.  
  41. The effects settings are Wind, Gust, Flake and Swirl.

  43. Going to the Scene subpanel gives the following options:
  44. Start Frame, End Frame, Particle quantity, Particle size, Reset, 
  45. stop or repeat, Align to path and Make plugin scene. There are 
  46. also buttons to choose the replacement objects and create the 
  47. scene file.

  49. The interface is very easy to use. If you've worked with Sparks 
  50. on the Amiga, you'll find this much simpler, and if you're new 
  51. to Sparks you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. I've 
  52. created a number of scenes with it and have been very happy with 
  53. it's capabilities. Here's some of the cool features:

  55. Once you've installed it, you'll find a separate plugin under 
  56. the Surfaces/Shader Plugins button for the Sparks Age Shader. 
  57. This allows you to have the particles change color as they 
  58. "age". You can also set the alpha of the particles so that say, 
  59. they're invisible before they're activated, then are fully 
  60. opaque when "born" and gradually become invisible again.

  62. Sparks are created by loading an object consisting of particles 
  63. (single point polys) and specifying the release rate, etc. Since 
  64. this is done from the objects panel, each object can have it's 
  65. own parameters!

  67. The "force" that propels the particles is the objects pivot 
  68. point. Move the pivot point, and Sparks automatically 
  69. re-calculates the effect.

  71. Collisions...not just for a ground plane, but using other 
  72. objects as well. (The collision object must not be moving 
  73. though).

  75. You can create the "normal" type of scene file, or a special 
  76. "plugin scene file". The normal scene is like the Amiga Sparks 
  77. was, where every object is keyframed at every frame. The plugin 
  78. scene only creates a keyframe at frame 0 for each object, and 
  79. tells each object to "follow" the particles path. This is kinda 
  80. hard to explain, but is easy to do once you mess with it and can 
  81. be used for some very cool effects.

  83. The author DOES plan on making an Amiga version, as well as DEC 
  84. Alpha. He would LIKE to even do an SGI version, but since he 
  85. doesn't have an SGI yet, well, will have to see.

  96. old Amiga version it's $150.00 for the upgrade.

  99. nothing drastic). Should be selling the final within 3 weeks or
